LAGOON 620 - TREND SETTER

The new, awaited LAGOON 620, was lauched last month. It is a great looking cat specially from inside. Let's have a look at the beautiful pictures by Nicolas Claris.

The LAGOON 620 is built with the infusion process. Lagoon has a lot of experience in this building technique. This should guarantee not only stiffness and quality but also a very reasonable weight to length ration and good sailing performance. The design is by famous VPLP, the designer of the Lagoon Range. The most amazing feature is the space on the boat both outside and inside. Outside, the flybridge is huge and hosts two steering stations for a better view on the sea, which is a first on a catamaran of that size (if I am not mistaken). You can relaxe on the fly, on the trampoline, in between the transoms, in the cockpit, or on the huge safo in the salon, so there are lots of places to get some privacy.
The interior is designed by famous multi-awarded designer studio couedel-hugon yacht design and it is a great success. The interior is very clear and uncluttered. Lots of light inside through the large French sliding window and the huges portholes. The kitchen is generous and fully equipped with a double access to the salon or directly on the transom which will be great for the crew to serve the guests. The LAGOON 620 is a great charter boat for a crew. The owner suite in the 3 cabins version is huge since it takes all of the starboard hull and has a private and direct access to the transom (like the kitchen on the other side). The beds are large, comfortable island beds.

The LAGOON 620 is available in a owners version with 3 or 4 cabins and in a charter version with 5.
The LAGOON 620 will be exibited at the September Boat Shows of Cannes, Southpamton, and the ISWA;

AEROYACHT 110 - The World most innovative super catamaran

Multihull passionate and expert Gregor Tarjan, founder of Aeroyacht International, and renowned designer Pete Melvin sat down together to think about what their dream luxury catamaran would be. They came out with many innovative solutions, some of them never seen on a multihull of that size.

In a previous post, I introduced a list of these innovations, like the Icon A5 amphibian plane “tender”, the reverse bows, the competition wing-rig, the semi-flybrigde... Let’s complete the list to show how well the Aeroyacht 110 concept was thought out.

A “Outside-In” design process. Most of the time yachts are designed the other way around. Large multihulls are loaded with equipment, staterooms and end up with two or three decks. Gregor says: "We first have conceptualized a pure sailing machine with a beautiful streamlined shape and then estimated the weight for a high-end, open plan luxury interior. Instead of fitting 6 small staterooms we prefer to offer our clients three large VIP suites in a fast sailing machine"

“Soft-chine” hulls. Multiple Chines hull can be seen on racing sailboats, fast motor yachts and tenders. They increase the yacht structure stiffness, stability, performance thanks to less wetted surface, and improve esthetics. On the top of that Morrelli and Melvin have applied all their knowledge in fast hulls and bows out of the water design. The entire forward section of the Aeroyacht 110 hulls are forced up and will come out of the water keeping resistance to a minimum and increasing surfing capabilities

Asymmetric dagger boards. They are seen on smaller size catamarans but never before on a 110 footer. Retractable dagger boards increase windward performance and safety at sea. In the downward position, they enable the Aeroyacht 110 to sail close to the wind. In the upward position, the boat experiences less resistance and really "flies". The asymmetric boards also prevent the Aeroyacht 110 from tripping over the waves since the yacht offer no resistance and can slide sideways. They are also a great feature to reduce the draft and access really beautiful and private anchorages.

Aeronautical engineering.
The design team in charge of the Aeroyacht 110 at Morrelli & Melvin is made up of aeronautical engineers and structural designers. They have made the most out of the same tools used to develop aircrafts structures like complex computers programs that model Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Finite Elements Method (FEM). They succeeded in keeping the structure as light as possible, yet strong enough to face the roughest sailing conditions.

All this innovations were aimed at creating a super catamaran with a speed potential of over 32 knots and effortless cruising at 20 knots, in supreme yacht comfort and safety.

MONACO YACHT SHOW SPECIAL

After Cannes lets take a look at the Monaco Yacht Show which will take place in Monaco from the 23 rd to the 26 th of September. Who will be there ? (most of the information is already in the blog so click on the links to know more about each project).

BERRET RACOUPEAU YACHT DESIGN

Olivier and his team will introduce their latest designs including a 90 footer aluminium luxury catamaran "LA SELLA DEL DIAVOLO" which has just been launched in Italy and of course their eco-smart 100 foot CODE [E]. Olivier has developed within his design office a special research and development department to study the most innovative eco-friendly solutions for luxury sailboats.

JFA

JFA is actually building the largest all composite catamaran a 110 foot on VPLP drawings. I am really waiting to hear more about this beautiful catamaran but very little information is coming out of the shipyard.

SUNREEF

The new SUNREEF 90 DD

SUNREEF is actually building a SUNREEF 102 DD which will be launched this winter and SUNREEF 114 which will be launched next January. To late for this year yacht show but hopefully we can see one of them for Monaco in 2010. SUNREEF will also introduced the new SUNREEF 90 Double Deck with an innovative mezzanine in the saloon and the breathtaking 150 by SUNREEF. I would really like SUNREEF to find a buyer for this concept which is really different from the other designs. If there is one place to find a rich and new design attracted client it is Monaco indeed.

VPLP

The VPLP design office has created the largest sailing catamaran to date with DOUCE FRANCE a 138 footer and HEMISPHERE, the largest ever catamaran which is still at the DERECKTOR shipyard due to legal issues between the owner and the yard. Too bad, this catamaran was really expected. The design office has drawn many other project for very large catamaran which they will introduce during the show.

CANNES BOAT SHOW SPECIAL

The sun is now shining in France, even in Brittany, and we are getting close to September and the Cannes and Monaco Boat Shows. I did a quick check at the Festival International de la Plaisance de Cannes website to see what you will find in terms of luxury catamarans. The list of exhibitors is very short, I hope it has not been updated, I will do a check in August to complete this post.

CATLANTECH

Catlantech will introduce the CATLANTE 600, a 60 foot catamaran, built by the Catlantech shipyard in Lorient (France). The interesting, yet I am wondering how they are doing that, feature of the CATLANTE 600 is that they offer 9 different version, from charter to owner, both sail and motor trawler type.

WINDPEARL YACHTS

First time I hear of this company located in Paris. They are the builders of luxury sailing yachts including a FastCat 60 designed by Marc Lombard. I couldn't access their website so I found more information on Marc Lombard's website. I hope I am writing about the same cats. If you know more let me know.

VPLP

Of course the world most famous multihull designer office will be at the show to present I guess many of their design including the VPLP 110 being actually built at the JFA shipyard.

NOAH ALUMARINE

Alumarine, the builder of the largest sailing catamaran Douce France will introduce the NOAH range of motor trawler catamaran with their amazing design. The shipyard will introduce three different sizes a 69, a 76 and an 88. I really like the design of these elegant catamarans. I already wrote a post about the range if you want to see more details.

SUNREEF YACHTS

Of course SUNREEF will there again and strong with three units afloat : the last SUNREEF 70 POWER "SEA BASS", the SUNREEF 70 sailing "SEAZEN II" and the SUNREEF 62 "TAHAA II" with an extravagant design.
At this occasion SUNREEF YACHTS which enlarges its activities and is actually building new production facilities will introduce a new range of monohulls motor yachts the Blue Reef Yachts and a new in house section CYS International dedicated to building one off projects from external designers and clients.

MORELLI AND MELVIN 65 ' AT WESTERLY MARINE

Westerly Marine, is a custom boat builder located in Santa Anna, California specialised in Carbon Fiber performance Vessels. They are actually building two 65 footer Morelli and Melvin designed catamarans and they look great.

Westerly Marine was founded in 1970 (the year I was born). The yard can take in charge a custom project from A to Z thanks to a highly qualified work force mastering the arts of composite, wood works, mechanics, and electricity. They have built very fast racing monohulls and more confortable ones still able to achieve high performance.

Two Morelli and Melvin 65 ' are being built in the yard full carbon as you can see on the pictures. I don't have any drawings of the interiors but from the exterior you can see that twose two cats are really designed to sail fast and long distance off shore. They should be easily handled by a crew of two.
The design office also located in California, in Huntington Beach is doing a great job designing sleek, fast and elegant catamarans. I would say that recently their trademark is the use of reverse bows which not only are great looking but also very efficient in increasing the performance of this sailboats.
If you have more information about those cats, let me know.

SEA BASS - THE NEW SUNREEF 70 POWER

SEA BASS was launched a month ago at the SUNREEF shipyard in Gdansk - Poland. Designed to be a luxury charter catamaran, SEA BASS really looks nice and is full of new interesting features. Lets take a tour of this news SUNREEF.

One of the most amazing feature is the size of the flybridge which hosts a relaxing area around a four seats Jacuzzi, a dining table, a wet bar with an ice maker, a crane for the jet ski, a barbecue and an hydraulic diving platform for the fun. The lighting system is state of the art with a remote control to manage both the exterior and the interior lighting from a 300 m distance. This bus system enables to have different lights colors and create impressive lighting sequences..
SEA BASS is a semi-owner version with 2 equals master cabins with great sea views. There are two over luxury mid-ships cabins and a owner/cooks quarter. The kitchen is very impressive with a lot of space and storage.

The helm station is very comfortable with a small salon and leads to both owner suites and the flybridge.

You will find a nice video of SEA BASS on SUNREEF's website.

VPLP SIGNS A "MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING" WITH HYUNDAI YACHTS DIVISION IN KOREA

VPLP, the world leader in Multihull design keeps on developing and is now exporting its knowledge to Asia, cooperating with Hyundai Yachts a former division of the giant HYUNDAI Heavy industries.

In the photo (L-R) representing Hyundai Mr. Choi (sales and marketing manager), Mr. Do (CEO), Marc Van Peteghem (VPLP), Olivier Beaumelou (By VPLP) and Dong eun Kang (VPLP)

Words by Katrina Kelshall, VPLP's pr.

VPLP were recently invited to Korea by Hyundai Yachts Division (a former subsidiary of Hyundai Heavy Industries) to explore business potential and synergies between the two companies. This familiarisation tour culminated in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the two companies

Hyundai Yachts is a well known and respected yacht and boat builder in Korea and also involved in the development of maritime related projects. They recognize a need for the expertise of VPLP Yacht Design in developing the pleasure craft market. VPLP and her recently launched sister company By VPLP, managed by Olivier Beaumelou, see this as an ideal base in the Asia Pacific region from which to launch into the local marine market as well as production of their designs for the global yacht market.

“We were very impressed by the scale of the operation in Korea” said Marc Van Peteghem “ the potential is evident although some streamlining and refinement needs to take place in order to produce the type of quality required to satisfy the demands of the elite yachting clientele.”

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the two companies which agrees to explore and develop maritime related joint ventures specifically the design of a 40’ sail monohull, a 30’ power cat and a twelve passenger water taxi all be produced by Hyundai Yachts.

VPLP’s Dong eun Kang, who is originally from Korea but who has been with VPLP for three years spearheaded the trade mission.

MALA CONDUCTA - A BEAUTIFUL MORELLI AND MELVIN 60' BUILT BY LYMAN MORSE

This great looking cat was launched in April by Lyman Morse. With its reverse bows I have to admit it is one of the most beautiful cat launched in her size. Again a great Morelli and Melvin design.
MALA CONDUCTA was designed to be fast and comfortable. The shipyard did some testing to know wether to build in pre-preg or SCRIMP infusion method. They went for pre-preg. The mock up was carefully worked through with the owners. As you can see the interior is modern with light wood.

Two other 60 footer Morelli and Melvin designed with reverse bows are currently being built by Westerly Marine in California. I will introduced them in a future post.

150 by SUNREEF - A CONCEPT BOAT WHICH MIGHT COME TRUE

I already wrote a post about the 150 by SUNREEF. The design department of Sunreef Yachts has pushed the concept as far as possible and came out with stunning 3d of the interior and exterior of this amazing mega catamaran. In the following text, Sunreef Yachts details the concept behind the design. Enjoy...

ONE FIFTY BY SUNREEF – A NEW ERA FOR MEGA CATAMARANS AND SUPERYACHTS

For immediate release,

15 May 2009 – Gdańsk, Poland

THE IDEA BEHIND THE CONCEPT

ONE FIFTY by Sunreef is the result of a year-long study into a new, revolutionary concept for modern and luxury catamaran – the megayacht, as an alternative, both aesthetically and functionally, for all current catamarans on the yachting market. This unique design technique insisting on pure simplicity and minimalism of form has been successfully adopted by the car industry and is now becoming increasingly popular in yachting. ONE FIFTY by Sunreef is the biggest sailing catamaran in the world. However, still in the design stage, this megayacht is waiting for her future owner.

The key words for this extravagant design are: uncut teak, sleek shell (hulls) and streamlined core (deckhouse).

The futuristic look of ONE FIFTY by Sunreef comes from one big innovation, namely almost invisible full-beam deckhouse. The link between the aft deck and the navigation station on the top is through a centrally positioned sloping deck. We are not talking here about a typical deckhouse shape, as the hulls, sides, bulwark and the superstructure itself are not traditionally shaped but rather combine together into one huge solid. The deckhouse spanning the entire beam provides the significant advantage of creating another level (floor) within the hulls. Thanks to this, the possibilities for arranging space increase remarkably. The main deck has gained impressive living space; all cabins for 12 guests are on this level and are generously illuminated by a big glass top. Below decks are located crew quarters for 9, all storage rooms and the galley.

EXTERIOR DESIGN

A closer look at the whole yacht allows us to see two clearly contrasting structural elements, placed one inside the other. The external layer is a wide clear metallic shell with a black, monolithic core inside. The teak is applied continuously along the hull line, which enhances the sleek shape of the boat. The shell is the most streamlined part of the boat and logically forms hydrodynamic hulls. On the sides, there are two pure, aesthetic lines comprising a set of windows. The core looks like a huge glass construction yet it is not made of glass but simply imitates it. Solar panels can be fitted to provide lots of natural, green energy to the yacht.

As for the deckhouse, the ONE FIFTY by Sunreef does not have a classic deckhouse clearly dominating the bulwark level. This tendency to simplify the profile line can be observed frequently on monohull superyachts. The deckhouse lowers towards the bow section and finally reaches main deck and hulls level. This gives the yacht's profile an expressive look and has an aggressive exterior shape. Pure lines and a minimalist shape can be eqasily disturbed by installing traditional guard rails on board; therefore ONE FIFTY by Sunreefhas a profil sleak and clean, free of railings and exploits instead differences in deck levels as a natural protection.

The exterior teak surfaces are the only ones accessible to guests and the glass/ sololar panels tops above them can be reached by crew only for maintenance purposes and mooring.

Another innovative technical feature on board is the boom which doubles as a crane for the lifeboat or for a large tender to be stowed out of sight, aft of the engine room.

The teak covering aft section creates an impression of fluidity and seems to fall down from the navigation station throughout the main deck level towards the end of the hull< style="color: rgb(255, 255, 0);">

INTERIOR DESIGN

The interior design is based on the specific aesthetic tendency in space organisation; therefore, it is not a final solution, rather a suggestion. The steel frame supporting glass top is created by symmetric squares and combines very well with the space division of the salon and cabins thereby giving the impression of linear fluidity.

Thanks to high level of luminosity and the glass walls of the salon and alley, the border between indoor and outdoor space is very soft. Guests will be able to enjoy panoramic views looking at the aft or admire flapping sails above their heads. Shade can be created by pulling down blinds between ceiling panels.

The sloping deck with glass walls hides below a small garden and mattress and thus create a intimate meditation area which can be converted into a comfortable cinema spot with a huge screen in the shady zone where the sloping deck becomes a fly-bridge.

To enable the crew to operate the yacht efficiently, access throughout the ONE FIFTY for crew and guests has been carefully separated for both parties. Access for guests is aft via large glass doors while the crew enter directly from the hull by a passerelle.

REVOLUTIONARY IDEAS SUMMARY

1) Cockpit forward ,
2) Full-beam deckhouse,
3) Sloping deck leading to the cockpit from the aft dividing the salon in two,
4) Topside covered by solar panels,
5) No guard rails
6) Uncut teak,
7) Exterior design based on two sealed elements – shell and core,
8) Separate entrances for guests and crew,
9) No hatches, light comes in directly through a top glass,
10) Interior garden
